News Update April 2009: We are pleased to announce that, following the Public Inquiry in December 2008, the Planning Inspector recommended that planning permission should be granted; and that the Secretary of State agrees with the Inspector's recommendations. We are now dealing with the required planning conditions and taking the project forward for implementation. We look forward to working closely with East Riding of Yorkshire Council and with the local community to make this an outstanding example of sustainable energy generation.

a new type of power station...
Welcome to the web site of gb-bio, a locally-owned and run company, set up to create and manage the Tansterne Straw-burning Power Station in Holderness, East Yorkshire, UK.
Straw burning is a fantastic way of producing the energy that we all need and use. Arable crops like wheat and barley use carbon from the air when they grow. This same carbon is released when the straw is burnt, so the process is known as carbon-neutral. This means that the generation of electricity doesn't add fossil carbon to the atmosphere, unlike coal-, oil- or gas-fired power stations.
Straw is a by-product of the huge areas of arable crops grown in East Yorkshire - it is what is left when the grain has been removed. Unlike dedicated "biofuels" (eg willow coppice or miscanthus grass) it is already available to use for our energy needs. It is simply a question of recognising this currently un-tapped energy resource and putting it to use for everybody's benefit. For more information on straw
